Gregory Peck and Hume Cronyn were great losses, but THIS... THIS is a crushing blow.
William Marshall, who played the title role in the 1972 Count Dracula-inspired blaxploitation film Blacula and its 1973 sequel Scream, Blacula, Scream!, died Wednesday at a Los Angeles rest home. He was 78.
According to The Associated Press, Marshall had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease in recent years. -

1) Don't take this too seriously (not that I *really* worry about that here, but, just to be safe).
2) This is one of the best parody/satire sites I have seen in a LONG time. I love the way it pokes fun at society as a whole: not just white people trying to "act cool" and be accepted by blacks, but also the misperceptions some whites have about blacks AND some blacks have about whites.
3) The pictures are the kicker. The couldn't have made better ones.

It was bound to happen: someone here was destined to mention that sticky legal issue over the Pledge of Allegiance. But the main reason for me posting this rant was to link to what I feel is an outstanding editorial from none other than Roger Ebert. From Yahoo!: VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In case anyone had any doubts, the Vatican believes that transsexuals should not become priests, monks or nuns.
According to the Catholic news agency Adista, the Vatican has sent a note to heads of Roman Catholic bishops' conferences and religious orders around the world on the subject of sex change operations.
The confidential document written by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, its doctrinal watchdog, says those who undergo sex change operations have a "pathological personality situation".
It advises bishops and heads of religious orders not to allow transsexuals to become priests, nuns and monks and any who have already made it through the admissions process should be expelled if discovered.

Rob may already know, and I'm sure no one else cares, but I'm still a huge drum corps geek. This season has a lot of interesting subplots to it...
Can the Cavaliers three-peat? (Probably)
Can the Cavaliers break Santa Clara Vanguard's Division I High Score of 98.80 (set back in 1989)? (Probably)
Can the Seattle Cascades make Finals in their first year in Division I? (Probably)
Magic of Orlando, coming back after two years off, wins the Division II Championship with an all-time record high score of 99.05.
Can Magic become the first Division II or III corps to ever make Finals? (It's looking that way)
Anyways, here are the results of Thursday nights' Quarterfinals. The Top 17 advance to Friday nights' Semifinals, and the Top 12 from Semis advance to Saturday nights' Finals.
98.70 Cavaliers (Rosemont, IL)
96.95 Cadets (Bergenfield, NJ)
96.90 Blue Devils (Concord, CA)
96.00 Santa Clara Vanguard (Santa Clara, CA)

Did I say who cares about soccer? :-) Oh well, uh, I guess I'm starting to care. USA records their first World Cup shutout in 52 years, advances to the Quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years, and wins a World Cup elimination game for the first time ever.
Now we get the honor of being trounced by an awesome German squad. Then again, we were underdogs versus Portugal and Mexico, too. :-)

Kind of like A Christmas Story, only entirely different.
The posts in Erik's rant got me thinking. While it has come up during conversations that, yes, my ex and I did partake in an abortion, I realized I've never really talked about it. Never really told the story. Now, including the background information about our relationship, the prologue, and the aftermath would turn this into a novella. So, to keep it a reasonable length, I will only be telling the story of the actual day it was done. Regardless of your feelings on the subject, I hope you will at least find this an interesting read...
***********************************
I seem to recall the abortion taking place on Christmas Eve morning, but now that I pull up a calendar I find that I'm mistaken. The date was in fact December 21st, 2000. The day was clear, sunny, and pleasant. Not too cold, fairly warm for December. We showed up at the medical building early in the morning, around 7 or 8. It was your standard medical building: six stories, full of dentists, pediatricians, podiatrists, etc. The place we need to go to bore an innocuous sounding name, something like "Women's Health Clinic" and was located in the basement, below ground level. We took the elevator down one floor, and the doors opened to reveal a small hallway with only one door. There was a security guard stationed outside the door who grilled us with several specific questions. After he determined we were legit he called inside and had us buzzed in.
The waiting room was your standard waiting room, as far as doctor's offices go. The receptionists were sitting behind bulletproof glass and similarly magnetically locked doors. The desk clerk pushed a clipboard through a slot at the bottom of the glass, and it was holding a copious amount of paperwork that my ex had to fill out. We sat down, and I took the time to look around the waiting room. There were about 8-10 people total, all of them female except me. Only one other girl had some support with her, and it was an older lady I assumed to be her mother. I was the only boyfriend, fiancee, or husband present. All of the girls looked distraught, not a single one was comfortable, cool, or collected. Several, it was easy to tell, had obviously spent many recent hours crying. Most of them looked like they were about to start. I wished I could've gone to each of them, put an arm around them, attempted to offer them *some* sort comfort, but I already had my hands full trying to do that for the one person that meant the most to me. The one thing I will always remember about the waiting room was the almost palpably suffocating aura of loneliness. No friends, no lovers, no support. It did little for my already low opinion of most of the members of my own gender. Perhaps there are women out there who view abortion as a form of birth control, and head down to the clinic every few months with aplomb... but I certainly didn't see any on this day. It was readily apparent that every single girl in there had agonized over the decision, none of them were happy about it, but, like us, they had determined that it was their best course of action. I also didn't see any High Schoolers in there, either. The youngest girl looked to be 18-20, my fiancee (which she was at the time) was 21, a few other girls looked to be in their early to mid 20s, and the last two women looked to be in their late-20s or early 30s.
Eventually my ex completed the reams of medical history and release forms she had been given and turned them in. From there it was another waiting period of 15-30 minutes before she was summoned to the back rooms. I was forbidden from accompanying her: patients and medical staff only behind that door. I left the clinic and went back upstairs, where I picked at meal in the buliding's cafe and attempted to while away the time (they told me to come back in 60-90 minutes). The rest of this is my recap of what I was told happened after she was taken back to have the procedure done.
The doctor, thankfully, was far more pleasant and receptive than the receptionists. The first step was to go into an examining room and talk. The doctor talked to her for about 15 minutes, asking basic questions like "Why have you chosen to have an abortion" and inquiring about her knowledge on other areas such as adoption. After the talk came the final "thinking period": she was left alone for 30-45 with nothing but pamphlets on abortion, adoption, and life after having a child. This is the moment of last recourse for the girls who go in: speak now or forever hold your peace. The doctor returned after a period of time and made sure that she really wanted to go through with it, then she was escorted to the room where the procedure would be done. Not having been with her, I know little about the actual procedure. What I do remember is her "dentist" comments. You know when you go into a dentist and they put that little hissing suction pump in your mouth to suck up the saliva? Evidently, they use a similar device for abortions. They just stick a little vacuum up inside you and roto-root everything out of there.
Now understand, my ex eats pain like candy. She once slammed her right hand in a car door, causing hairline fractures in three fingers, and regarded the incident with only mild interest. No yelp of pain, no holding the hand and crying like a sissy, no shouting of profanities (all three of which are more than likely what I would've been doing). This is the same girl I watched get flogged on the behind, wearing only a skirt made of light-weight fabric, at a Renaissance Faire with a fairly large leather cat-o'-nine-tails with metal studs in each tip. The first two hits didn't even provoke a response, and the third hit (administered by a guy who was about 6'4" and 250 pounds and swinging with all his might) only drew forth a small smile. (At which point, visibly shaken, the leather accoutrements peddler gave up.) This is why she has 15 piercings and 2 tattoos (at last count): she likes pain.
Thus, it holds a great deal of weight in my opinion once she related to me that the abortion was one of the most unenjoyable, physically painful, and the most uncomfortable thing she had ever been through. A procedure that had reduced her nearly to tears. The procedure, both physically and mentally, is no walk in the park.
After that, the doctor gave her a bottle of antibotics (which they keep on-site, no prescription to be filled at Walgreens) to prevent infection, and we went home. The whole event lasted no more than 4 hours. To this day we are certain we made the best choice, and neither of us regrets having the procedure done. That's my story. Take from it what you can.

Dan Savage brings up an interesting point in this article, one that I happen to agree with. I'll paraphrase it and make it more universal here...
Oral sex is now a standard of any healthy sex life, and not some bizzare kink or taboo that a guy or girl should feel guilty about expecting or asking for.
I, personally, agree 100%. (The title of this rant being his advice to a woman on what she should say to her husband.) Let's move out of the dark ages, folks: oral sex is not a bad, evil, nasty, gross thing. For any one who brings up the "taste" complaint, allow me to paraphrase Dan again (changing the viewpoint to my perspective):
Why would you date someone who finds you and your genitals revolting? I wouldn't waste half an hour, let alone a year, on a girl who wouldn't put my dick in her mouth. Why straight girls condescend to date boys who won't eat pussy is beyond me.
Once a relationship has advanced to the sexual stages, I expect oral sex just like I expect "regular" sex, and have absolutely no qualms about providing "regular" sex or going down on my lover whenever she wants.
Comments? How does everyone else feel about oral sex in general? -

Here's what I think I know...
1. It would be an absolute travesty for Nebraska to play in the Rose Bowl. If Tennessee wins this Saturday versus LSU, they'll go, and that's fine. If Tennessee loses then Colorado deserves to go, but it will more than likely be Nebraska: a team the not only did not win their conference, but didn't even win their division (half-conference). Oh, and Colorado pounded the crap out of them just a week or two ago.
2. The Niners really don't have good odds versus the Rams this week. Honestly, folks. Not that the Niners are BAD, but one of the Niners' main weaknesses (Defensive Line) is matched up against one of the Rams main strengths (Offense, specifically Offensive Line). You look at the teams that have had some success or even beaten the Rams this year, and you see three teams with terrific defensive lines that like to rush the QB: Philadelphia, New York Giants, and Tampa Bay. Marshall Faulk will tear you up because he's Marshall Faulk, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. Kurt Warner will tear you up only if you let him sit back in the pocket, much like a Dan Marino or Dan Fouts. You get Warner moving, he's not nearly as great (still pretty good, but nowhere near the All-Pro level he's at as a drop-back passer). If the Niners can't find a pass rush somewhere this week, they're sunk.
3. Speaking of Bay Area trouble, the Raiders need to be very careful this week. They'll be facing one of the best running backs in the NFL this season (Priest Holmes), and we all know how good the Raiders run defense is: not very, even when they had Darrell Russell, who looks to have played his last game in the silver and black. I don't think the Chiefs are good enough to beat the Raiders in Oakland, but then again, I said the same thing about the Cardinals.
4. Stop the voting. The undisputed coach of the year for NCAA College Football is Ralph Friedgen of Maryland. No one else even comes close. He took a struggling program predicted to finish around .500 at best, and made them 10-1 major bowl players, including the first ACC Champion not named Florida State in about a decade.
5. Stop the voting. The undisputed coach of the year for the NFL is Bill Cowher of Pittsburgh. No one else even comes close. He took a struggling program predicted to finish around .500 at best, and made them 9-2 and major Super Bowl contenders. (Props to Steve Mariucci of San Francisco, but his team had already shown some promise coming into the season.) -

Bah Humbug.
Maybe I'm just not festive enough, but I'm already sick of hearing Christmas music. Maybe it's because it all sucks. There have only been two Christmas songs of any worth across the entire span of human history: Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" and Mel Torme's "A Christmas Song". Okay four: gotta throw in Weird Al's "Christmas at Ground Zero" and "The Night Santa went Crazy"; although most people don't find those as festive and indicative of the holiday spirit as I do.
So, we have a whole month of Burl Ives, Nat King Cole, and putrescent retreads of (god awful to begin with) Mannheim Steamroller. I just know that by, oh, yesterday, I'll be ready to rip someone's head off at the merest echo of "Deck the Halls" with Santa's balls), "Rudolph" (Giuliani, the red-nosed mayor), or "Frosty" (the blow-man, had a very shiny nose... crap, now I'm getting them mixed-up, or am I?)
Anyone else think holiday music sucks? -

Any one planning on going and seeing the new Harry Potter movie? Me neither. Can you believe they made the movie 2 1/2 hours long? A theatre full of ADHD kids not on their Ritalin aren't going to be able to sit through a 150 minute movie. Most kids just don't have that long of an attention span. Anyone else tired of receiving the endless streams of emails poking fun at or parodying Osama bin Laden and/or the Taleban? I'm still in favor of the continued bombing of Afghanistan, I'm still in favor of further military action if required. But I'm tired of receiving stupid, inane emails trying too hard to be funny. I'm sick of the multitude of "Day-O" parody mp3s. I'm sick of the pictures of men in turbans making love to goats/camels/whatever. I'm sick of the pictures of American military aircraft with witty captions emblazoned on them. And I'm sick of the bombing runs STILL being on the news 24/7. I know that it's going on. Have we captured/killed Osama bin Laden or any other major terrorist? No. Tell me when THAT happens. Tell me the BIG events. I don't care that we hit this building or that building. I don't care that the leader of Outer Bhutan has issued a formal proclamation supporting the American retaliatory/revenge bombing (and yes, that's what this is, and yes, I'm okay with it). The paranoia of America has a face, and it is the emails and the incessent news coverage. Is there any other conclusion to come to other than that the terrorist attacks of September 11th were a 100% complete success? So stop sending me stupid anti-Osama emails, you wanker fartasses. - View/Add Comments (4 so far)
You've heard the adage: "If a billion monkeys banged on a billion keyboards for a billion years, one of them will eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare." Taking that into consideration, I've calculated that approximately 50 dung-flinging monkeys with korn shells and a big bag of heroin could reproduce some of the software here at work in about 15 minutes. Is programming everywhere this bad? It's like we hired the programmers that weren't good enough for Microsoft. Anyone else work with programmers who seemingly created their degrees with Paint Shop Pro 7?? - View/Add Comments (5 so far)
We had an anthrax scare at work yesterday, and I'm sure the "white powder" will turn out to be from Hostess donuts. This is what made me laugh, though: a company bulletin was issued to all employees, and I can sum it up in two sentences: "We just want you to know that the employee safety is our TOP priority" promptly followed by "Any employee caught talking to the media will be immediately terminated." ... Yeah, the employees are the top priority. This place would throw 500 of us into a wood chipper if it would preserve the company's "image". Corporations. Feh. - View/Add Comments (0 so far)
